Becoming a global citizen involves not only learning about other cultures and places but also recognizing that each individual has an impact on the world. To ensure that our students’ experiences positively contribute to their host communities and to the planet, API participates in several important initiatives, including a new, voluntary student carbon offset program.*
API has partnered with Carbon Clear**, a world leader in carbon management and one of the world’s largest providers of carbon offset credits, to offer students the chance to address the environmental effect of their study abroad travel. All of Carbon Clear’s projects contribute to environmental sustainability and have measurable social improvement as a primary goal.
Based on a random sample of the international flight paths of students, it was determined that the average API student contributes 1.6 tons of CO2 to the atmosphere just with his/her roundtrip international flight (see picture below for a graphical representation of what 1 ton looks like!).
To offset this carbon footprint, API has chosen four projects that students may elect to sponsor, including a methane capture landfill project in Chile (API's newest program site!); energy efficient railways in India; a run of river hydro-energy project, and a biomass cogeneration project in Brazil. For a small fee, students will be able to contribute to the funding and success of these projects and consciously contribute toward the reduction of CO2 gases. Based on the number of API students, API can purchase carbon offset credits in bulk at below-market prices and students’ contributions will have a greater impact. All this serves as proof that by working collectively, we can contribute to a better—and cleaner!—world. More information on this exciting new option may be found by clicking here.
*Carbon offsets are credits that originate from carbon reduction projects. These projects balance out CO2 pollution from one place with an equivalent reduction of pollution in another place. They help to address climate change because our rapidly moving atmosphere ensures that CO2 reductions from any source have an immediate global impact.
**With over 150 clients, and offices in London, Paris, Madrid, Ankara, Istanbul and Austin, TX, Carbon Clear is one of the world’s most experienced and trusted carbon management firms.
Beginning fall 2011, API will open its first programs in the Middle East in the gulf countries of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Students will be able to explore this unique corner of the Islamic world through API, learning Arabic language and culture while taking a wide variety of courses in English such as art, architecture and design, international business, engineering, environmental studies, pharmacy, sports science, and much more!
API has partnered with Qatar University in Doha, Qatar, and the American University of Sharjah in Sharjah, UAE to offer students an extraordinary opportunity to learn about a critical language, culture, and region while experiencing the hospitality and generosity of the Qatari and Emriati peoples. Both universities bear regional and national accreditations, as well as many American national accreditations and departmental honors.
More information will be posted over the coming weeks and months about these programs. Look for photos on our Facebook page soon as well~!
Though official deadlines for Italy are June 1, students who are interested in studying abroad with API in Italy in the fall of 2010 are encouraged to submit applications until June 15th. Please contact the API office for more details!

API has added a groups tab to our Facebook Fan Page. This is an area where admitted students, alumni, advisors/faculty, and parents/guardians can connect with their peers to learn about and discuss API programs. We invite those of you who fall in one of these categories* to check out the available groups and join today!
*Students who have not yet been accepted on an API program are welcome to post comments/photos/videos and interact with others on the wall of the API Fan Page.

Academic Programs International and Marist College invite you to join the Marist-LdM Graduate Degree Program in partnership with the Scuola Lorenzo de'Medici in Florence, Italy. This degree program has been designed to meet the academic needs of qualified students from around the world.
The M.A. in Museum Studies is an interdisciplinary advanced degree program which aims to provide students with an understanding of how museums operate within their social and cultural contexts. Drawing on faculty from the U.S., U.K. and continental Europe, courses are taught using a variety of innovative methods, yet they share two fundamental core principles which are embedded in the program’s philosophy: 1) museums’ engagement with the public is paramount and 2) museums vary greatly across the globe and therefore must be studied from an international comparative perspective.

API is thrilled to announce that we will now offer undergraduate and graduate programs in our 26th international destination - Dublin!
Beginning with the spring 2011 term, API students will be able to study at
Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
Each school features a wide selection of course offerings appealing to students of varying academic interests.
Notable program highlights include:
*Long known for its strong liberal arts tradition, Trinity College Dublin also offers state of the art science and engineering programs and facilities. Other available subjects include education, music, political science, theology, and more. Trinity has designed a special Semester Start Up program that allows American students to spend one month on campus prior to the beginning of the semester learning about Irish archaeology, literature, and history, and acclimating themselves to life at a new school and in a new country (and earning credit in the process). Trinity features the largest research library in Ireland, and receives all Irish and UK copyrighted material - a wonderful resource!
*Students at University College Dublin (UCD) may choose 1st through 4th year courses from in-demand subjects such as agriculture, architecture, nursing, sports management, and more. Students may study at UCD's AACSB/EQUIS-accredited business school, or learn about their home country through the eyes of the world at the Clinton Center for American Studies. Finally, students can participate in a summer program that offers a 3-credit Irish history course along with a 3-credit internship (in areas such as business, communications, health fields, hospitality management, and more).
*NUI, Maynooth is one of the few Irish institutions open to underclassmen (freshman and sophomores are welcome), and offers students the best of both worlds - a small-town Irish immersion experience within a short commute of a modern European capital. NUI, Maynooth features a variety of liberal arts, business, engineering, and science courses. Its charming old-world campus blends seamlessly into what has been dubbed "Ireland's only university town," creating a comfortable atmosphere for learning and exploration.
As with API's other comprehensive programs, students in Dublin will receive extensive pre-departure, on-site, and re-entry support, tuition, housing, attentive on-site staff, organized international and in-country excursions and cultural events, medical and life insurance, and mobile phones.
